Wallows craft synth-laced, sunlit indie rock that evokes bittersweet nostalgia for fleeting romances and lost innocence. The Los Angeles trio—Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston—grew up together, weathering adolescence while shaping their sound. As preteens, Minnette and Lemasters met Preston in Santa Clarita, forming Feaver, later The Narwhals, before evolving into Wallows in 2017.
Minnette and Lemasters also pursued acting careers—Minnette gained fame in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, while Lemasters starred in Men of a Certain Age—but music remained their shared passion. Early singles like the Strokes-inspired “Pleaser” and the playful, Vampire Weekend-flavored “1980s Horror Film II” showcased their knack for catchy melodies and sharp rhythms.
Their 2019 debut, Nothing Happens, fused post-punk energy with bedroom pop intimacy, producing breakout tracks like the dreamy, Clairo-assisted “Are You Bored Yet?” As they moved into the 2020s, Wallows embraced bolder experimentation and bigger hooks, exemplified by infectious singles like “OK.”
“We push ourselves in any way we can,” Minnette told Apple Music. “If there’s a traditional way or a weird way, we try the weird way as much as possible. That’s what we want moving forward.”
Through constant reinvention, Wallows capture the restless spirit of youth, pairing heartfelt lyricism with adventurous sonic twists.
