Nashville-based indie alt-rock band Moon Taxi returns with Set Yourself Free, their sixth full-length album and most self-driven project yet. Created primarily in-house, the band wrote, recorded, and released the album themselves under their own label, 12th South Records.
Spanning rock, synth-pop, and bluegrass, the 13-track album reflects the creative freedom that comes with 15 years together. “This time, we really looked inward,” says keyboardist Wes Bailey, noting the group’s choice to forgo outside writers. Much of the record was born during remote pandemic sessions, including the title track, written over a five-way FaceTime call.
Despite the fragmented process, Set Yourself Free feels closer to the band’s early work. “We didn’t have an agenda,” says guitarist Spencer Thomson. “We just explored—and that made it more authentic.”
The album opens with the instrumental “Walk Out,” giving each band member room to shine. First single “Classics” became a toast-worthy anthem at Hangout Fest, while “Evergreen,” a bluegrass-inspired track featuring Grammy winner Molly Tuttle, pays tribute to Thomson’s hometown of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
