The Kills are a minimalist rock duo with a raw yet stylish sound that constantly evolves. Formed in 2000, the partnership began when Alison Mosshart, then in Florida punk band Discount, met British guitarist Jamie Hince while touring in London. Their creative chemistry sparked an exchange of lo-fi recordings before Mosshart relocated to England, where they developed their gritty, hypnotic style with a simple Roland sequencer and stark guitar riffs.
Debuting with the 2003 album Keep on Your Mean Side, the Kills stood out from the garage rock revival with their blues-punk minimalism. They followed with 2005’s No Wow, an even leaner, darker effort tinged with post-punk and electronics. With 2008’s Midnight Boom, produced with Spank Rock’s Alex Epton, they embraced hip-hop-inspired beats and pop hooks, reaching broader success on both U.K. and U.S. charts.
During this era, Mosshart also joined Jack White in the Dead Weather while the Kills continued their ascent with 2011’s Blood Pressures, a more direct rock record that became one of their most commercially successful releases. After Hince overcame a serious hand injury, they returned with 2016’s Ash & Ice, an introspective, shadowy album recorded between Los Angeles and Electric Lady Studios in New York.
They remained prolific with tours, acoustic EPs, and covers, while Mosshart explored solo work and visual art. In 2020, they compiled rarities on Little Bastards and reissued No Wow in 2022 with new mixes.
Their 2023 album God Games, co-produced with Paul Epworth, marked another reinvention—this time layering piano-driven compositions with brass and choral vocals. Through decades of reinvention, the Kills have remained a fiercely distinctive duo, stripping rock to its essence while fearlessly expanding its boundaries.
