Nick Waterhouse was born in Southern California in 1986 and raised in a home steeped in music. His parents were devoted listeners, filling the house with classic blues, soul, and rock from artists like John Lee Hooker and Van Morrison. Waterhouse began studying trumpet as a child, but at 13 he shifted to guitar. While attending high school in Huntington Beach, he formed the mod-influenced R&B group the Intelligentsia, who built a strong local following. After the band dissolved when its members left for college, Waterhouse relocated to San Francisco to pursue music more seriously.
The Bay Area proved challenging creatively, but a job at a record store specializing in rare R&B and soul singles became formative. Immersed in vintage recordings from the 1950s and ’60s, Waterhouse refined his songwriting and connected with like-minded West Coast musicians. He also discovered The Distillery, an all-analog studio in Costa Mesa, where he forged a lasting partnership with owner Mike McHugh. After several live studio sessions, Waterhouse released the single “Some Place” on his Pres Records imprint; it quickly sold out among collectors of modern R&B. He soon partnered with Innovative Leisure, which released his 2011 EP Is That Clear. In 2012, following a move to Los Angeles and a European tour with his band the Tarots, he issued his debut album, Time’s All Gone.
Alongside his solo work, Waterhouse became an in-demand producer, including sessions for the Allah-Las. His subsequent albums—Holly (2014) and Never Twice (2016)—deepened his reputation for vintage-minded R&B. The Leon Bridges collaboration “Katchi” later became a French chart-topper via an Ofenbach remix. His self-titled 2019 album, produced with Paul Butler, was followed by Promenade Blue (2021). He also co-produced and played guitar on Jon Batiste’s Grammy-winning We Are. In 2023, Waterhouse returned with The Fooler, reaffirming his singular, classic-informed sound.
