French vocalist, producer, and composer Oklou reemerged in September 2024 with family and friends, her first solo single since the acclaimed full-length mixtape galore. The song is an ethereal meditation on the mystery of existence, layered with arpeggiated marimbas, choral textures, and intricate production. “Are you even real?” she wonders in its enigmatic lyrics. Directed by Gil Gharbi, the accompanying video follows Oklou and friends through desolate suburban streets, the camera chasing them with urgency. Reflecting on the track, she explained, “family and friends feels like a battle, where I’m searching for answers to unspoken questions, running from something intangible—perhaps a memory. Maybe I just like the idea of escaping, of finding reasons to run.”
Born Marylou Mayniel in Western France, Oklou’s earliest musical training was in classical piano and cello, before discovering electronic music and pursuing production. Relocating to Paris, she began hosting weekly radio programs and performing under the name Oklou. Her debut EP For The Beasts (2017) and its follow-up The Rite Of May (2018) showcased her developing style, drawing early attention across Europe.
Breakthrough recognition came through collaborations with Mura Masa, A. G. Cook, and EASYFUN, the latter two celebrated for their work with Charli XCX. These projects paved the way for her 2020 mixtape galore, hailed as innovative and deeply introspective. Dazed described the release as “sophisticated in its composition yet cutting edge in its sound,” cementing Oklou’s reputation as a singular voice within experimental pop and electronic music.
Following galore, Oklou embarked on extensive touring, including support slots for Oneohtrix Point Never and Caroline Polachek, further expanding her international audience. With family and friends, she continues pushing sonic and emotional boundaries, crafting work that is as vulnerable as it is visionary
