Raised on both the East Coast and in the Midwest, Andrew McMahon began writing songs at the age of nine, heavily influenced by singer/songwriter-pianists like Elton John and Billy Joel. During his high school years, he co-founded the first incarnation of the pop-punk band Something Corporate, whose 2002 major-label debut soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart. In 2004, McMahon formed Jack’s Mannequin, but just as the group was preparing to release its 2005 debut album, he was diagnosed with leukemia at age 22. After a long battle and full recovery, he went on to record two more Jack’s Mannequin studio albums while also establishing The Dear Jack Foundation, one of the first organizations specifically supporting Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer patients and initiatives.
McMahon’s career expanded further when he composed songs for NBC’s musical drama Smash, earning him an Emmy Award nomination.
