Since arriving on the scene in 2012, Holly Herndon has pushed the boundaries of electronic and avant-garde pop to create a distinct and forward-thinking body of work. Raised in East Tennessee and once a church singer, she found her artistic footing in Berlin’s club scene before studying at Mills College. There, she began using her laptop as an instrument, developing real-time vocal processing and custom patches featured in early tracks like “Breathe” and “Dilato” from her debut album Movement.
While earning her PhD at Stanford, Herndon explored the intersection of music and digital life with her second album, Platform (2015). Inspired by telematic performance and online culture, the album featured tracks like “Chorus” and “Home,” incorporating daily internet sounds and themes of platform politics. Platform earned critical acclaim and year-end list placements from Pitchfork, NME, and The Guardian, and marked the first commercial album to include an ASMR-triggering track. That same year, Radiohead invited her to open their European tour.
In 2019, Herndon released PROTO, a groundbreaking project blending human and AI voices in an electronic pop choir. The single “Godmother” (featuring Jlin and the AI entity Spawn) highlighted her evolving sound and ongoing exploration of technology’s role in music. CNN called her a visionary “shaping the future of A.I.,” as she continues to redefine what’s possible at the intersection of art, code, and humanity.
