Soft Cell, the pioneering synth-pop duo of Marc Almond and Dave Ball, formed in 1977 while studying at Leeds Polytechnic. Rising from DIY beginnings with their EP Mutant Moments, they broke through with a deal from Some Bizarre Records and found global success with their haunting 1981 hit “Tainted Love”—a reworking of Gloria Jones’ cult soul classic. The single, paired with “Where Did Our Love Go,” topped charts worldwide and helped their debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret hit the U.K. and Canadian Top Five. The album also spawned hits like “Bedsitter” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.”
From 1981 to 1984, Soft Cell scored four U.K. Top 20 albums and six Top Ten singles, including “Torch” and “What!” They landed multiple Top 30 hits with follow-up albums The Art of Falling Apart (1983) and This Last Night in Sodom (1984). After disbanding, Almond launched a successful solo career—earning a U.K. #1 with Gene Pitney in 1989—while Ball found ’90s dance chart success with his band The Grid.
Soft Cell reunited in the early 2000s, releasing Cruelty Without Beauty in 2002 and returning to the U.K. charts with “The Night.” In 2018, they staged a supposed farewell concert at The O2 in London, followed by the expansive retrospective Keychains & Snowstorms. The overwhelming response reignited their partnership, leading to new music and a record deal with BMG.
Recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, their 2022 album Happiness Not Included marked their first new studio release in two decades. The album was accompanied by U.K. and U.S. shows celebrating their legacy, including full performances of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, confirming Soft Cell’s continued relevance and creative spark.
