Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) could easily rest on their legacy, performing beloved hits like “Enola Gay” and “Joan Of Arc” on the nostalgia circuit. Instead, they’ve delivered Bauhaus Staircase—a bold, politically charged album that ranks among their finest work.
Following the critical and commercial success of 2017’s The Punishment of Luxury, which returned Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys to the Top Five for the first time since 1991’s Sugar Tax, the duo initially questioned whether to continue. “Fans and critics said Punishment could sit alongside Architecture & Morality or Dazzle Ships,” says Humphreys.
Despite that high bar, Bauhaus Staircase pushes their artistic ambition further, merging the experimental vision of Stockhausen with the pop perfection of ABBA. “We’ve worked hard to rebuild ourselves since reforming,” McCluskey explains. “We’d never want to put out a record that sounds like a parody of our past.”
Though often labeled as a “heritage” act, OMD refuse to coast. “We’re not just making an album to sell new merch,” McCluskey insists. “This record matters. And if it ends up being our last, I’m proud it’s this one.”
