Suzanne Vega’s newest song, Rats, grew out of a quirky conversation with the producer of her 2007 album Beauty & Crime. “We were trading stories about who had seen the biggest rat,” she recalls. “After that, everyone seemed to have their own rat story. They were all true, so I wrote them down and turned them into music, inspired by The Ramones and Fontaines D.C.” Released September 17, Rats chronicles New York City’s notorious rodent population and arrives with an animated video by filmmaker Martha Colburn. The single also offers an early glimpse of Vega’s forthcoming album.
Recognized as one of the most original and enduring songwriters of her generation, Vega first gained prominence during the early ’80s folk revival in New York’s Greenwich Village. Her self-titled 1985 debut launched a career defined by songs of striking emotional honesty, intellectual precision, and an ability to transform everyday details into vivid narratives. NPR Music has praised her for “making vital, inventive music” throughout her decades-long career.
Her storytelling remains tied to themes of city life and real-world observation. The New York Times has described her as a “masterful storyteller” with a “clinically poetic eye,” an artist whose songwriting continues to balance intimacy with sharp-edged observation. Her sound part folk, part pop, always distinct has remained compelling and instantly recognizable since first captivating listeners more than 30 years ago.
Vega’s most recent project, An Evening of New York Songs and Stories, is a live album that revisits her celebrated catalogue alongside rarities and a moving cover of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” The set also features “New York Is My Destination,” drawn from her one-woman play about Southern Gothic novelist Carson McCullers, underscoring Vega’s lifelong artistic and personal connection to the city she calls home.
