Mystic Familiar is Dan Deacon’s most emotionally open and transcendent album to date — a vibrant, meticulously crafted collection of synth-pop songs born from years of self-discovery, experimentation, and collaboration. Following 2015’s Gliss Riffer, Deacon immersed himself in scoring films, composing for dance, working with orchestras, and co-producing other artists, yet he yearned to return to his own voice — literally and artistically.
These songs were shaped by daily creative prompts, meditation, and therapeutic practices that helped him tap into a deeper, more vulnerable place. The result is 11 kaleidoscopic tracks that blur the line between absurdity and profundity, exploring themes of identity, aging, creativity, and transcendence. The album’s opener, “Become a Mountain,” is the first to feature Deacon’s unprocessed singing, signaling a bold shift toward personal storytelling.
Highlights include “Sat By a Tree,” a reflection on memory and mortality, and the four-part “Arp” suite, a life journey rendered through ecstatic synths and jarring saxophone blasts. With Mystic Familiar, Deacon doesn’t just create music — he builds a world, guided by an internal presence, the titular “familiar,” that serves as both muse and mirror.
More than just an album, Mystic Familiar is a moving meditation on how to create something lasting in chaotic times — a sonic companion for navigating life’s beauty, doubt, and mystery.
