Toronto duo Zeds Dead—Dylan “DC” Mamid and Zachary “Hooks” Rapp-Rovan—stand as pioneers of the modern North American bass scene. Since forming in 2009, they’ve earned JUNO nominations, hundreds of millions of streams, and dozens of Top 20 Billboard hits, becoming one of the most successful independent acts in global dance music. Zeds Dead emerged from Toronto’s underground, first uniting through their hip-hop project Mass Productions before discovering electronic music and launching Zeds Dead—a name inspired by Pulp Fiction. They quickly gained attention through their Bassmentality club series, which helped shape Canada’s bass scene and introduced early performances from Skrillex, Borgore, and Nero.
Following early hits like Rudeboy, Adrenaline, and collaborations with Omar LinX, Zeds Dead cemented their sound with projects like Hot Sauce and Somewhere Else, which charted on Billboard and earned two 2015 JUNO nominations, including Breakthrough Group of the Year. Their 2016 full-length Northern Lights featured Diplo, Pusha T, Twin Shadow, Rivers Cuomo, and NGHTMRE, debuting in the Billboard Top 10 and earning another JUNO nomination for Dance Recording of the Year.
In 2016, the duo launched Deadbeats Records, a label that’s grown into a lifestyle brand, live events powerhouse, and launchpad for artists such as Subtronics, 1788-L, REZZ, and Blanke. The imprint’s Dead Rocks annual Red Rocks showcase and Deadbeats Tour have become global festival staples, with sold-out events and international stages.
