Patti LaBelle (born Patricia Holt, May 24, 1944, Philadelphia) is a legendary R&B vocalist celebrated for her five-decade career spanning girl group pop, funk, disco, gospel, and jazz. Known for a voice that can soar like a siren or whisper with poignancy, she first gained fame in the early 1960s with the Bluebelles, who later evolved into the trailblazing funk group LaBelle. Their theatrical flair and futuristic sound culminated in the 1974 chart-topper “Lady Marmalade,” making them the first African-American act to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House.
LaBelle launched her solo career in 1977, recording steadily through the late ’70s with songs that balanced soulful ballads and dance-floor energy. By the early 1980s, she reached new heights on Philadelphia International with hits like “If Only You Knew” and “Love, Need and Want You.” Her duets with Grover Washington, Jr. and Bobby Womack brought Grammy nominations, while her shift to MCA yielded crossover success. The Beverly Hills Cop anthems “New Attitude” and “Stir It Up” (1984) broadened her reach, followed by her platinum album Winner in You (1986), powered by the #1 duet “On My Own” with Michael McDonald.
Through the 1990s, LaBelle’s albums Burnin’, Gems, and Flame all went gold or platinum. Burnin’ earned her first Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female, while the live set Live! One Night Only won Best Traditional R&B Performance in 1998.
LaBelle later expanded her repertoire with gospel (The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle, 2006) and jazz (Bel Hommage, 2017), while maintaining an active presence onstage and onscreen, including American Horror Story and Empire. A businesswoman as well as an artist, she developed a successful line of baked goods. Her unmatched versatility and commanding presence cement her as one of R&B’s most enduring icons.
