Pioneering new wave ensemble Devo emerged from the 1970s Midwestern underground with an ingeniously obscure, self-fashioned aesthetic that resonated widely. Originating in Akron, Ohio, the band embraced the concept of "de-evolution," blending dark social satire and eccentric humor with stylized visuals. Their breakthrough came with 1980's "Freedom of Choice" and its hit "Whip It," whose video became an MTV staple. Devo's robotic rhythms, distinct uniforms, and focus on "little minds through big technology" set them apart. Initially dismissed by some as novelty, they evolved into a cult band with enduring influence, exploring various projects, collaborations, and a return to new music in 2010's "Something for Everybody." Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2023, Devo showcased their journey in the comprehensive anthology "50 Years of De-Evolution 1973-2023."
