Sacramento-based Club Nouveau, formed in 1986, featured members Jay King, Denzil Foster, Thomas McElroy, Samuelle Pratter, and Valerie Watson. Spearheaded by King, known for the hit "Rumours" by Timex Social Club, the group, signed to King Jay Records, crafted disco and funk tunes. Their peak in 1986-87 brought four consecutive hits: "Jealousy," "Situation #9," a rendition of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me," and "Why You Treat Me So Bad," with the latter two hitting number two on R&B charts.
