A Brooklyn native raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Kim endured a turbulent childhood following her parents’ separation. As a teenager, she experienced periods of homelessness before her talent caught the attention of Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace. Biggie mentored her and recruited her into Junior M.A.F.I.A., where she stood out on the group’s hit single “Player’s Anthem” and their 1995 album Conspiracy.
Lil’ Kim’s solo success continued with a string of platinum albums, including Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003). In 2001, she reached global superstardom with “Lady Marmalade,” a chart-topping collaboration alongside Christina Aguilera, P!nk, and Mýa. Legal troubles interrupted the promotion of her fourth album, The Naked Truth (2005), released as she served a federal prison sentence. Despite limited promotion, the album earned critical praise, and her incarceration was documented in BET’s Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown.
After her release in 2006, Lil’ Kim returned to music independently, releasing a series of mixtapes and collaborating with artists including Missy Elliott, Diddy, and 50 Cent. She also expanded into television, appearing on Dancing with the Stars. After more than a decade without a studio album, she returned in 2019 with 9, reaffirming her legacy as one of hip-hop’s most influential and uncompromising voices.
