The band’s origins trace back to 1977, when the Dirty Dozen Social Aid and Pleasure Club in New Orleans assembled a traditional Crescent City brass band. This initiative brought together two fading traditions: social aid and pleasure clubs—which historically provided funeral arrangements for Black southerners who could not afford insurance—and brass bands, the early predecessors of modern jazz. These bands traditionally played mournful dirges during funeral processions, then shifted to jubilant dance tunes once the family was out of earshot.
