Bovine excision—the unsettling, bloodless removal of organs from cattle—serves as the eerie touchstone for Bloodless, the opening track of Samia’s third album of the same name. Her voice glides through vivid, evocative lyrics against the spare strumming of a lone acoustic guitar. What begins in quiet intimacy slowly unfurls into a tempest of layered harmonies, culminating in a ghostly, unforgettable refrain: “And drained, drained bloodless.”
These hollowed-out cattle become a grotesque metaphor—vessels emptied and displayed, nurtured in pursuit of an ideal both unreachable and constantly scrutinized. Through piercing imagery—Diet Dr. Pepper and Raymond Carver as twin emblems of minimalism, white underwear and leeches, a Degas dancer poised at a bannister—Samia dissects a life lived under projection and extraction. “I felt the pea, can I eat it?” she asks, framing merit as a commodified act. It’s just one thread in the intricate tapestry of Bloodless.
The album’s soundscape shifts effortlessly from sparse folk meditations to sweeping indie-pop climaxes, as Samia explores her relationship with a symbolic, fragmented version of Men—an amalgam of expectations and illusions she once tried to fulfill. “I’ve spent the past two decades unintentionally conflating men with my understanding of God,” she reflects. “The person I became to impress that imagined figure is inseparable from who I am today. This album is my attempt to face that directly.”
Written and recorded throughout 2024 between North Carolina and her new home in Minneapolis, Bloodless reunites Samia with longtime collaborators Caleb Wright and Jake Luppen. It arrives as the much-anticipated follow-up to 2023’s Honey and 2020’s acclaimed debut The Baby. Across thirteen songs, Samia unpacks the hollow form she once inhabited—a vessel whose value stemmed from its own absence, where playing dead became a way of being. With Bloodless, she attempts to exhume the self buried beneath those performative shells, moving toward an acceptance of her full, flawed, and unfiltered identity.
