In the mid-'80s, Level 42 broke the mold by infusing pop with jazz-schooled slap-bass virtuosity, departing from the norm of prog-rock and fusion genres. Initially part of producer Robin Scott's new-wave project M, Level 42, formed in 1979 on the Isle of Wight, quickly carved their niche. Their sound evolved from synth-sparkled gloss to a fusion of vocal interplay between bassist Mark King and keyboardist Mike Lindup. Their Thatcher-era hits like "Something About You" epitomized sophisticated British pop. Despite lineup changes, Level 42 remained a UK Top 10 fixture until their 1994 dissolution, with periodic reunions in the 21st century.
