Hailing from Southampton, England, Jones started piano at seven, later joining Canadian band Warrior. Returning to England, he delved into various musical groups, then pursued studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. Transitioning to solo work with synthesizers and drum machines, Jones incorporated mime Jed Hoile into his performances. Noticed by John Peel, Jones landed BBC sessions and opened for new wave acts, ultimately signing with WEA in England and Europe, and Elektra in the US by 1983.
