Free Nationals are an American R&B band that was formed in Los Angeles. The band comprises Jose Rios on the lead guitar, Ron "T.Nava" Avant on keyboards, Kelsey Gonzales on bass and synth, and Callum Connor on the drums. They are known for frequently supporting Anderson. Paak as the backing band.
Free Nationals has an R&B, funk, and progressive soul sound to their music. They have been associated with bands like Mac Miller, Daniel Caesar, and Kali Uchis. In the late 2000s, the guitarist and the keyboardist met while studying music in Hollywood. Shortly after, they would meet one another and form the band Free Nationals. The idea for the name came from the concept of Christopher Columbus sailing to the New World because they wanted to have something natural and unique with their musical sound.
Their debut studio album, Free Nationals, was released in late 2019 under OBE and Empire. Their single "Time" featuring Mac Miller and Kali Uchis would reach number 22 on the New Zealand Hot Singles. Free nationals have also made numerous appearances with other artists, including Remi Wolf, Rae Khalil, and Tash Sultana.
