Joshua Paul Davis, best known as his stage name DJ Shadow, is an American DJ, songwriter, and record producer. His studio album was released in 1996, and he would begin a massive influence over the electronic and hip hop industry from this point forward. In his early career, he would experiment with the four-track recorder in high school and began his music career as a disc jockey for the University of California at the Davis campus. During this time, he would work for the campus radio station and explore a bit of experimental hip hop and become associated with the London-based record label, Mo’ Wax.
From there, DJ Shadow would begin to have a significant influence over the industry. Many of us remixes were released in the early 90s, under the subsidiary label of Hollywood Records, Hollywood BASIC. In the early 1990s, he was still getting his footing in the industry, but his first full length work would ultimately give him the rise that he needed to become more of a notable name in the industry. After his debut production album, six years later, he would release a second album in 2002 titled The Private Press. He would also release music in protest of the illegal 2003 invasion of Iraq, making a song titled “March of Death”. This would be released for free for his fans.
Since those days, he has become a notable individual in the music industry, releasing even more music over the course of his entire career. He has a home studio that he works at primarily in a San Francisco suburb, and he moved there to be closer to the local record store. He has a personal collection of more than 60,000 records, and he has become significantly involved in the manipulation of samples, which is where large amounts of his work come from. To date, he has released six studio albums, and is in the process of creating his next one.
