When Black Pumas released their self-titled debut in 2019, the Austin-based duo sparked a wave of acclaim as explosive and passionate as their sound. The pairing of singer-songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist-producer Adrian Quesada not only earned seven Grammy nominations but also built a reputation for their electrifying live performances—what Burton fittingly describes as “electric church.” As they began crafting their long-anticipated second album, the band expanded their musical horizons, weaving together lush blends of soul and symphonic pop, surreal dives into jazz-funk and psychedelia, and cosmic love songs that seem to descend from the stars. In making Chronicles of a Diamond, Black Pumas deliberately tuned out external expectations. “I knew the first record was good when we finished it, but I never imagined the response we got,” Quesada reflects. “This time, there was so much pressure and anticipation—it was overwhelming at points—but we focused on trusting our instincts, just like before.” The result is an album that fully reflects the spirit behind its creation. “Above all, I wanted to make something we’d love playing live, night after night,” Burton says. “I wanted to laugh, cry, groove, and just feel it—it was a completely personal mission.”
