4 Non Blondes burst onto the charts in 1993 with their worldwide smash hit “What’s Up?” before disappearing almost as quickly as they arrived. Formed in San Francisco in 1989, the band—Linda Perry (vocals), Christa Hillhouse (bass), Dawn Richardson (drums), and Roger Rocha (guitar)—rose rapidly from the Bay Area’s alternative scene after signing with Interscope Records and releasing their debut, Bigger, Better, Faster, More? in 1992.
Powered by Perry’s powerhouse vocals, “What’s Up?” steadily built momentum on modern rock radio before crossing into the mainstream, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its music video became a staple on MTV, driving album sales past six million worldwide. Within just a few years, the band had earned platinum and gold certifications around the globe and become a household name, saturating radio, MTV, and late-night television.
The band toured extensively, sharing stages with Aerosmith, Neil Young, and Pearl Jam, and contributed songs to film soundtracks including Wayne’s World 2 and Airheads. In 1995, Perry departed to pursue a solo career, later becoming an acclaimed songwriter and producer for artists such as Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Pink, and Gwen Stefani.
Though their run was brief, 4 Non Blondes’ impact has endured. “What’s Up?” has maintained decades of radio play and, in 2024, entered the Spotify Billions Club. For the first time in decades, the band is returning to U.S. stages, with festival appearances at Wonderfront (San Diego, CA), BottleRock (Napa, CA), Sea.Hear.Now (Atlantic City, NJ), Shaky Knees (Atlanta, GA), and more—bringing their iconic sound back to longtime fans and a new generation alike.
