The Darkness burst onto the scene in the early 2000s with over-the-top theatrics, high-octane glam rock, and a sharp sense of humor. Fronted by flamboyant singer/guitarist Justin Hawkins—known for his falsetto, outrageous leotards, and Queen-inspired flair—the band made a splash with their 2003 debut Permission to Land, led by the hit “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” They quickly became chart-topping stars, reviving ‘70s rock bombast for a new generation.
Despite early success, the band faltered after 2005’s One Way Ticket to Hell… And Back, with internal tensions and Hawkins entering rehab. The Darkness disbanded as members explored solo and side projects. Hawkins formed Hot Leg and released Red Light Fever, while others formed Stone Gods.
Reuniting in 2011, the original lineup returned with Hot Cakes (2012) and continued to evolve with new drummer Rufus Taylor, son of Queen’s Roger Taylor. Albums like Last of Our Kind (2015), Pinewood Smile (2017), and Easter Is Cancelled (2019) reinforced their commitment to theatrical rock, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and massive hooks.
In 2021, Motorheart embraced their love of AC/DC and arena rock, and in 2023, they released the behind-the-scenes documentary Welcome to the Darkness. Their eighth studio album, Dreams on Toast, arrived in 2025, featuring the singles “The Longest Kiss” and “Hot On My Tail,” plus a guest monologue by Stephen Dorff.
From pub circuits to major festivals, The Darkness remains a joyous, larger-than-life celebration of glam, metal, and camp—equal parts parody and passion.
