The Dandy Warhols, formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994 by Courtney Taylor (later Taylor-Taylor), Zia McCabe, Peter Holmström, and Eric Hedford, blend psych rock, shoegaze, power pop, and synth pop with sardonic wit. Early on, they gained notoriety with “Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth” from The Dandy Warhols Come Down (1997) and “Bohemian Like You” from Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2001), songs that skewered hipster culture while nodding to Brit-pop sensibilities.
After their indie debut Dandys Rule OK? (1995), Capitol Records brought them wider exposure. Hedford departed in 1998, replaced by Brent DeBoer. Their sound evolved through Welcome to the Monkey House (2003), a synth-pop pivot produced with Nile Rodgers and Nick Rhodes, spawning “We Used to Be Friends.” They explored sprawling psychedelia on Odditorium or Warlords of Mars (2005) and later more restrained textures on Distortland (2016).
The band’s career intertwined with pop culture—supporting David Bowie on tour, appearing in the Sundance-winning documentary Dig! (2004), and opening their Portland studio/event space, the Odditorium. They maintained a steady stream of side projects and archival releases, including Dandy Warhols Are Sound (2009) and live albums.
Later highlights include the subdued This Machine (2012), the eclectic Why You So Crazy (2019), and the three-hour improvisational Tafelmuzik Means More When You’re Alone (2020). In 2024, they returned with Rockmaker, injecting punk energy influenced by the Damned and MC5, featuring Pixies’ Frank Black.
Across three decades, the Dandy Warhols have remained unpredictable—shifting between satirical pop, dreamy psych, and genre experiments—cementing their status as one of alternative rock’s most enduringly offbeat and inventive bands.
