Thirty years ago, The Black Crowes—fronted by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson—burst onto the scene with their debut album Shake Your Money Maker. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a guitar-party cracker that marries Southern R&B crunch and Anglo cock-strutting attitude,” the record revived rock at a moment when glossy pop and hair metal dominated the charts. Paying homage to blues legend Elmore James in its title, the album went double platinum in its first year, instantly cementing the Crowes as torchbearers of gritty, authentic rock and roll. Melody Maker famously crowned them “The most Rock n’ Roll Rock n’ Roll Band in the world”—and they lived up to it.
In their early years, The Black Crowes toured with AC/DC, Robert Plant, and Aerosmith, while also earning headlines for their anti-corporate rants, which got them tossed from a ZZ Top tour. Their wild trajectory featured everything expected of legendary bands: difficult label deals, addictions, marriages and divorces, breakups and reunions, and sold-out tours—including one with Led Zeppelin icon Jimmy Page. Across their career, they released eight studio albums, four live albums, and sold more than 35 million records worldwide.
The heart of the band has always been the Robinson brothers. Before age 23, Chris and Rich had already written several hit songs—while simultaneously clashing in ways that often threatened to implode the group. By 2013, the tension led them to call it quits, each vowing never to play together again.
But on November 11, 2019, radio legend Howard Stern stunned fans by announcing the reunion of the Robinsons. On February 13, 2020, they officially celebrated the 30th anniversary of their quintuple-platinum debut with a tour performing Shake Your Money Maker in its entirety, bringing The Black Crowes’ raw spirit back to the stage.
