At just 25, Samara Joy has already achieved what many jazz artists spend a lifetime chasing. A Bronx native with deep musical roots, Joy grew up singing in church and was inspired early on by classic R&B and gospel. Her jazz journey began in high school and accelerated during college at SUNY Purchase, where she immersed herself in the tradition and honed her craft. In 2019, she won the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, launching a career that would soon become historic.
Her self-titled debut in 2021 introduced a radiant new voice, while her follow-up, Linger Awhile, earned her a 2023 Grammy for Best New Artist — a rare honor for a jazz singer. The album showcased not only her warm, velvety vocals but also her ability to write lyrics to jazz solos and connect deeply with her band, especially guitarist Pasquale Grasso.
Joy’s fame quickly crossed into mainstream and pop culture. With millions of likes on TikTok and appearances on major TV shows, she’s made jazz accessible to new audiences. In 2024, she won another Grammy for her self-produced single “Tight,” and co-wrote the uplifting “Why I’m Here,” featured in the film Shirley.
Now, her latest album, Portrait, marks a bold new chapter. Co-produced with Brian Lynch and recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, the album blends standards and originals, showcasing her as a confident bandleader, arranger, and lyricist. Songs like “Reincarnation of a Lovebird” and “Peace of Mind/Dreams Come True” demonstrate her evolving voice as a writer, while standards like “You Stepped Out of a Dream” remind us of her classic touch.
