Rei Ami is a musically dexterous Korean-born alt-pop singer and producer who incorporates rap elements into her confrontational songs. Born in Seoul, Rei Ami moved with her family to the United States at six. Raised in a strict Christian household, she began piano and guitar lessons meant for church services. Yet restrictions on “worldly” music pushed her to seek out her own influences, ranging from Britney Spears to Luther Vandross.
Her career accelerated when the viral track “Trippin Toddlers” drew industry attention, paving the way for her 2019 debut single “MAKE IT MINE.” The track’s sinister bedroom pop, layered with synth-funk and trap, highlighted Ami’s vocal flexibility—shifting from husky rapping to sultry tones and digitally warped delivery. “SNOWCONE” and “DICTATOR” followed, further expanding her stylistic palette. By 2020, she reached an even wider audience through Sub Urban’s “Freak.” In 2021, she teamed with Anime on “do it right,” a highlight of Foil, which also featured a collaboration with Lolo Zouaï.
In late 2023, Ami leaned harder into her darker instincts with shhh, led by singles like “yellow tape” and “body bag.” That same year, she appeared on Dillon Francis’s This Mixtape Is Fire TOO. Expanding into voice acting, Rei Ami also voices a central character in Kpop Demon Hunters and performs many of the film’s standout songs.
