When American poet and teacher Mark Van Doren published his 1943 work Our Lady Peace, he could never have imagined that decades later a Canadian rock band would adopt its title as their name. Today, Our Lady Peace—comprised of Raine Maida, Duncan Coutts, Steve Mazur, and Jason Pierce—stands among Canada’s most successful modern rock groups. With more than 5 million albums sold worldwide, four JUNO Awards, and ten MuchMusic Video Awards (one of the highest totals ever earned by an artist or group), OLP has become a defining force in Canadian music. Known for their eclectic style and Maida’s soaring falsetto vocals, the band continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
Their second album, Clumsy (1997), launched them into international acclaim, fueled by the Canadian No. 1 title track and the hit single “Superman’s Dead.” The record achieved platinum status in both Canada and the U.S., with sales topping 1 million in each country. In 1999, the band released Happiness…Is Not a Fish That You Can Catch, featuring the track “Stealing Babies,” which included a guest performance from legendary jazz drummer Elvin Jones, a close friend of then-drummer Jeremy Taggart.
The 2002 release Gravity marked a stylistic shift toward a more stripped-down sound and brought the band its biggest U.S. success, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200. In 2008, American Idol winner David Cook performed OLP’s “Innocent” on the show, leading to a songwriting collaboration with Maida that produced four tracks for Cook’s debut album.
In 2011, the band made headlines with the explosive music video for “Heavyweight,” directed by Christopher Mills (Interpol’s “PDA,” Modest Mouse’s “Float On”). More than three decades into their career, Our Lady Peace remains a cornerstone of Canadian rock, evolving while staying true to their innovative spirit.
