The boy band landscape owes much to Maurice Starr, who mentored Boston's New Edition in the early '80s. Childhood friends Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Bobby Brown, joined by Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe, formed the group under Starr's guidance. Their blend of doo-wop harmonies and electro beats in their debut album "Candy Girl" (1983) made waves in R&B. Evolving over the years, their sound embraced new jack swing with hits like "Cool It Now" and "If It Isn't Love." Despite member departures, reunions punctuate their enduring legacy as R&B icons.
