Maribou State are Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, the UK duo injecting electronic music with a vital shot of soul. Since 2011, they’ve carved out a distinctive niche on the global dance circuit, blending genre-fluid influences into organic, emotive soundscapes that redefine downtempo electronica. Their rise has been marked by sold-out tours across the UK, EU, and North America, alongside standout performances from Glastonbury to the Sydney Opera House.
Across three albums — culminating in their forthcoming release — Maribou State have perfected a delicate balance of intimacy, intricacy, and expansive electronic energy. Their 2015 debut, Portraits, was written and recorded in Liam’s parents’ garden shed in Hertfordshire, just outside London. Building on that breakthrough, 2018’s Kingdoms In Colour drew inspiration from travels through India, Australia, Morocco, and the U.S., weaving a global sonic collage. Its runaway single “Feel Good,” featuring Texan trio Khruangbin, propelled them further into acclaim, with Mixmag naming them Artist of the Year.
Despite branching into lush live productions, Maribou State never abandoned their club roots. Having first DJ’d together in the mid-2000s, they continue to honor UK dance lineage with tracks like the beloved “Turnmills,” a tribute to the iconic London club. They followed with Kingdoms In Colour Remixed in 2019, featuring reworks by HAAi, Maceo Plex, and DJ Tennis, and their 2020 installment of the Fabric Presents series, showcasing eclectic blends of soul, disco, house, jazz, and neo-classical.
Their latest project, Hallucinating Love, marks both artistic and personal evolution. Grappling with Chris’s major brain condition has brought the duo closer, shaping an album steeped in resilience and community. Featuring collaborators Holly Walker, Andreya Triana, and producer Jack Sibley, its singles “Blackoak” and “All I Need” showcase Maribou State’s signature fusion of folk, funk, strings, and soul-drenched electronics.
