Describing himself as “a DJ first, producer second, and MC last,” Madlib (born Otis Jackson Jr., October 24, 1973, in Oxnard, California) is one of hip-hop’s most visionary and prolific figures. Known for his analog production style, kaleidoscopic influences, and a vast catalog of aliases—including Quasimoto, Beat Konducta, and Yesterdays New Quintet—Madlib has redefined underground hip-hop through his genre-blending approach.
Raised in a musical family, with his father Otis Jackson Sr. a jazz musician, his mother Sinesca a guitarist, and his uncle Jon Faddis a renowned trumpeter, Madlib’s immersion in sound began early. In 1990, he joined Lootpack with DJ Romes and Wildchild, debuting on Tha Alkaholiks’ 21 & Over and later releasing Soundpieces: Da Antidote! (1999) through Stones Throw Records, cementing a lifelong partnership with the label.
From the cult classic The Unseen (2000) as Quasimoto to Shades of Blue (2003), Madvillainy (2004) with MF DOOM, and Piñata (2014) and Bandana (2019) with Freddie Gibbs, Madlib’s discography spans eras and moods. His collaborations extend across icons and innovators alike, from De La Soul, Mos Def, and Erykah Badu to Black Star, Talib Kweli, and Kanye West.
He launched his imprint Madlib Invazion, releasing projects like Rock Konducta, Liberation 2 (with Talib Kweli), and the Madlib Medicine Show series. Ever the experimentalist, he formed Jahari Massamba Unit with Karriem Riggins, partnered with Four Tet on Sound Ancestors (2021), and continues to expand his sonic universe with collaborators like Black Thought, Your Old Droog, and DJ Muggs.
