With his unmistakable voice, witty songwriting, and his one-of-a-kind double-necked “Guit-Steel” guitar, Junior Brown is truly an American original. Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona and raised in Indiana, Junior grew up immersed in the sounds of classic Country, Rock, and Blues. He honed his skills playing everywhere from school functions to a Boy Scout jamboree, eventually sitting in with legends like Bo Diddley.
After years playing nightly sets in honkytonks across the Southwest, Junior crafted a style all his own—fusing Country, Rock, Hawaiian, Western Swing, and more. In a dream, he imagined combining his guitar and steel guitar into a single instrument. That vision became reality in the Guit-Steel, built by Michael Stevens, which allowed him to seamlessly switch sounds mid-song.
His sharp, clever songwriting took shape in the 1980s, leading to a deal with Curb Records in the ‘90s and the acclaimed album Twelve Shades of Brown. Along the way, he earned Grammy nominations, a CMA Award, and appeared on Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, Letterman, and Better Call Saul. Junior has also collaborated with icons like George Jones, Ralph Stanley, and the Beach Boys.
Now based in Texas with his wife and bandmate Tanya Rae, Junior continues to record and tour. His music, performances, and signature style have left a lasting impact on American roots music. If you haven’t seen him live—get with it. He’s a true original.
