Black Sheep emerged as one of hip-hop’s most inventive duos during the genre’s golden era. Black Sheep contributed to The Brand New Heavies’ Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1, performing alongside Main Source, Gang Starr, and The Pharcyde. Their follow-up album, Non-Fiction (1994), received little promotion and less commercial success, leading to the duo’s breakup.
Dres pursued solo work—releasing Sure Shot Redemption (1999)—and appeared in Laurence Fishburne’s film Once in the Life. Black Sheep briefly reunited in the early 2000s, releasing the EP Redlight, Greenlight (2002), followed by 8WM/Novakane (2006), and later From the Black Pool of Genius (2010) and Tortured Soul (2018), featuring appearances from Q-Tip, Sadat X, and others.
