Beirut, the eclectic indie rock and pop collective led by multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon, has long been defined by its adventurous fusion of global traditions and modern indie sensibilities. Since emerging in 2006 with the debut album Gulag Orkestar, Beirut has woven together influences from pre-rock vocal eras, Balkan brass, Eastern European Romani sounds, wistful indie folk, and lo-fi psychedelic textures. Condon’s deeply melodic songwriting and wide instrumental range established Beirut as a distinctive force, with each album exploring new corners of global and personal landscapes.
Following Gulag Orkestar, Beirut expanded quickly, releasing the EP Lon Gisland and the full-length The Flying Club Cup, which became their first album to enter the Billboard 200. In 2009, the double-EP March of the Zapotec/Realpeople Holland showcased both Condon’s fascination with regional brass traditions and his electronic alter ego, Realpeople. The Rip Tide (2011) further refined Beirut’s sound. Their 2015 album No No No became their first to reach the Top 50 of the Billboard 200, shaped by a period of personal challenges for Condon.
Beirut’s fifth album, Gallipoli (2019), recorded across Italy, New York, and Berlin, continued their atmospheric, brass-driven direction. Health issues interrupted touring, prompting Condon to withdraw to the remote Norwegian island of Hadsel in early 2020. There he recorded much of 2023’s Hadsel, relying on a church organ, modular synths, ukulele, and brass to craft an intimate, wintry sound. He completed the album during pandemic lockdowns in Berlin.
In 2022, Beirut released Artifacts, a double LP collecting early recordings, B-sides, and previously unheard material. Their next project, 2025’s A Study of Losses, was commissioned by Swedish circus Kompani Giraff. Returning to a more expansive sonic palette, the album blended instrumentals and songs inspired by stories of cataloging human creation, reinforcing Beirut’s role as an endlessly exploratory musical project.
