Bartees Strange never intended to make Horror—the idea ambushed him. While working on his acclaimed sophomore album Farm to Table, a vivid and unsettling vision for a completely different record struck him, uninvited but undeniable. He pushed it aside until it demanded attention. What followed was a brave descent into buried fears and painful truths, unearthed with unflinching honesty.
Raised in rural America on scary stories and scary movies, Strange learned early to confront fear. As a queer Black kid in Oklahoma, terror wasn’t just fiction—it was daily life. Horror is his reclamation of that fear, turning vulnerability into defiance, uncertainty into power.
Built from the music of his childhood—Funkadelic, Teddy Pendergrass, Fleetwood Mac, hip-hop, house, country, indie rock—the album is a kaleidoscope of sound filtered through bold emotional clarity. Strange began production in his home studio, later teaming with Yves and Lawrence Rothman for rhythmic foundations, and finished it alongside Jack Antonoff after a chance meeting turned into creative kinship.
