Montreal-born and now based in Nashville, Allison Russell is a Grammy, Juno, Americana, and Folk Awards-winning artist, actor, author, songwriter, producer, human rights advocate, survivor, and mother. She co-founded Once and Future Sounds and the Love Rising collective, both dedicated to amplifying voices and fostering inclusivity in the arts.
Her solo journey began with the acclaimed 2021 debut Outside Child, a deeply personal album that earned widespread praise for its storytelling and resilience. In 2023, she followed with The Returner on Concord/Fantasy Records, further cementing her place as one of the most important voices in contemporary roots and folk music. Before her solo career, Russell co-founded and toured internationally with the bands Po’Girl, Birds of Chicago, and Our Native Daughters, building a reputation for collaboration and creative community.
In addition to her own projects, Russell is a member of Joni Mitchell’s Joni Jam ensemble, joining the legendary artist onstage in historic performances. Her band, The Rainbow Coalition, spent much of 2024 opening for Hozier on his Unreal Unearth tour, bringing her message and music to audiences around the world. Looking ahead, her All Returners headlining tour will extend into Spring 2025 with stops in Australia and North America.
Beyond music, Russell expanded her artistry onto the stage, making her Broadway debut as Persephone in Anaïs Mitchell’s Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown, where she performed from November 2024 to February 2025. She is also preparing for the release of her memoir with Little, Brown, which will explore her journey as a survivor, artist, and advocate.
