On July 10, 2024, Grammy-nominated New Orleans group Tank and the Bangas announced their upcoming three-part spoken word collection, The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, arriving via Verve Forecast. The first installment, The Heart, produced by James Poyser and featuring Jill Scott, is out now, with The Mind (produced by Iman Omari) and The Soul (produced by Robert Glasper) to follow by August 30. The full project, including bonus tracks, will release October 11.
Tank describes the collection as a celebration of poetry as a respected art form: “Poetry has always been my first love because it loved me back before music did. With these projects, I want young people to embrace poetry, to see it as powerful and cool.” Each part reflects a facet of her life and artistry — The Heart explores matters of love and self, The Mind tackles the struggles of womanhood and inner conflict, while The Soul flows freely through personal reflections and homages to her city.
Tank and the Bangas rose to prominence in 2017 after unanimously winning NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest, their electrifying performance showcasing a mix of poetry, R&B, gospel, funk, and pop. Since then, NPR has hailed them as one of the “best live bands in America,” a reputation further cemented by their kinetic performances across major television shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Austin City Limits, and The Today Show.
Their 2019 major label debut, Green Balloon, earned widespread critical praise and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The group’s third studio album, Red Balloon (2022), garnered another Grammy nod, this time for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2023 ceremony.
Beyond studio recordings, Tank and the Bangas thrive on stage, consistently selling out venues across the U.S. and abroad while playing top-tier festivals including Coachella, Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, and the Newport Jazz Festival.
Led by Tarriona “Tank” Ball, the group’s lineup includes Norman Spencer II (multi-instrumentalist), CJ Knowles Jr. (drums), Matthew MSkillz (bass), Rob Kellner (keys), and Etienne Stoufflet (saxophone). Together, they craft music that is fearless in experimentation, rooted in rhythm, and constantly evolving.
With The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, Tank and the Bangas return to their poetic roots while continuing to expand the boundaries of modern Black music. As Tank reflects: “Everything in this world has its place — the heart, the mind, the soul. These projects are my way of honoring all three.”
