Santana burst onto the scene in the late 1960s, blending Latin rhythms with psychedelic rock and quickly becoming icons. Their self-titled debut, launched by a legendary Woodstock performance and the hit “Evil Ways,” set the stage for a string of chart-topping albums: Abraxas (featuring “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va”) and Santana III. Led by virtuoso guitarist Carlos Santana, the band defined Latin rock’s mainstream breakthrough.
By the mid-’70s, Carlos shifted toward jazz fusion and spiritual exploration, collaborating with artists like John McLaughlin and Alice Coltrane. While commercial momentum slowed, Santana continued to evolve and experiment. The band remained active through lineup changes and stylistic shifts, finding modest success with albums like Amigos and Zebop!.
In 1999, Santana experienced a massive resurgence with Supernatural, thanks to Clive Davis’ hit-packed concept and the smash single “Smooth” featuring Rob Thomas. The album topped charts globally, earned nine Grammy Awards, and reintroduced Santana to a new generation.
Carlos continued to explore new collaborations into the 2000s, including the Grammy-winning Shaman, the Latin-infused Corazón, and jazz-inspired Africa Speaks with vocalist Concha Buika. In 2016, he reunited the classic Santana III lineup for Santana IV and later joined the Isley Brothers for Power of Peace.
Through decades of reinvention, spiritual journeys, and global collaborations, Santana has remained a pioneering force in rock, Latin, and fusion music — bridging generations with timeless guitar work and cross-genre innovation.
