Orianthi Panagaris, known simply as Orianthi, is an Australian-born guitarist, singer, and songwriter celebrated for her electrifying fretwork and hard rock energy. Born in Adelaide in 1985, she picked up guitar at age six, inspired by her father’s record collection of Clapton, Hendrix, and Santana. She honed her craft on acoustic before switching to electric at 11, and by 15 was onstage with Steve Vai. At 18, a jam with Carlos Santana led to a 30-minute performance and his public endorsement, propelling her onto stages with Prince, ZZ Top, and others.
Her self-released debut Violet Journey (2005) caught industry attention, leading to a Geffen deal and touring with Vai. Relocating to Los Angeles, she gained worldwide visibility performing with Carrie Underwood at the 2009 Grammys. That same year, she was chosen by Michael Jackson for his This Is It tour; his sudden passing meant her performances were captured only in the film of the same name. Days before the film’s release, she issued Believe, featuring the international hit “According to You.”
Orianthi’s career spans diverse projects, from blues-infused Heaven in This Hell (2013) with producer Dave Stewart to joining Alice Cooper’s touring band. In 2013 she partnered with Richie Sambora to form RSO, releasing the Rise EP and the full-length Radio Free America (2018) produced by Bob Rock.
Continuing her solo path, Orianthi released O (2020), the live set Live from Hollywood (2022), and her latest studio album, Rock Candy (2022), produced by Jacob Bunton. Throughout, she has remained a sought-after collaborator and a commanding live performer, her style blending technical mastery with anthemic rock spirit. Whether trading solos with legends or fronting her own band, Orianthi’s singular guitar voice and stage presence keep her at the forefront of modern rock.
