KRS-One, leader of the influential '80s hardcore hip-hop group, was known for his politically and socially conscious raps, earning the nickname "the Teacher." By 1990, his audience dwindled as his raps became preachy. In response, KRS-One adopted a harder, street-oriented style with 1992's *Sex and Violence*. His 1993 solo debut, *Return of the Boom Bap*, continued this approach but didn't reverse his commercial decline. Despite this, he released high-quality albums like 1995's self-titled effort and 1997's *I Got Next*. After a hiatus, he returned in 2001, continued releasing music, and celebrated hip-hop's 50th anniversary in 2023.
