Josh Wardle is a Welsh software engineer that is best known for developing the viral web-based game, Wordle. The New York Times Company recently acquired the game in late January 2022, making Wardle a success. He currently lives in Brooklyn. In his early life, he would grow up on an organic livestock farm in Llanddewi Rhydderch, a small village near Abergavenny.
In his educational pursuits, Josh would go onto to attend the Royal Holloway, University of London. He would earn a degree in Media Arts before moving to the West Cost of the U.S. where he would go to school at the University of Oregon, where he would earn himself a Master of Fine Arts in Digital Art. He has three brothers, one of such is the famed documentary filmmaker, Tim Wardle, who directed Three Identical Strangers.
Since 2021, he has been a software engineer for the Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF, which also created Lil Nas X’s Satan Shoes that were featured in one of his music videos recently. In 2013, while Wardle was working at Reddit, he would begin to make the prototype for the game, Wordle, which is a play on his last name. He would return to his prototype nearly eight years later with a friend of his, Palak Shah. He would create the game during the pandemic. With his partner, they would review 12,000 five letter words and narrow them down to the 2,500 most common words to help create the daily puzzle.
In January 2022, The New York Times Company would acquire the company “for an undisclosed price in the low-seven figures”. When it comes to success, Josh Wardle has earned it, and he has a massive amount of talent to create even more exciting content for his fans.
