Christopher Gardner is an American businessman and motivational speaker. He experienced homelessness in the 1980s with his young toddler son, and his story would become the inspiration for the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. When he rose to become a stockbroker and eventually found his firm, he would become an overnight success story.
From 1987 until 2006, Gardner would hold a stake in Gardner Rich & Co, his brokerage firm. Then, he would sell the stake in the company and publish his memoir, where the film's idea would be inspired. Over the course of his lifetime, he has been a member of the Navy, and he would learn from some of the great stockbrokers in the industry. He would even at one point buy Michael Jordan's car from him, owning his first Ferrari.
As a philanthropist, Gardner gives back to the world in numerous ways. He gives back to the Cara Program, the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church of San Francisco, and created a fund to help the homeless in San Francisco. He’s been awarded numerous accolades, including Father of the Year from the NFI in 2002 and the 25th Annual Humanitarian Award from the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women (LACAAW). He has two children: a son and a daughter.
