In 2024, Fleck unveiled a new trio with Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda and Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez. The group’s unconventional instrumentation recalls the daring early days of the Flecktones, Fleck’s pioneering ensemble that reshaped contemporary jazz and world music with audacious improvisation and Roy “Future Man” Wooten’s Drumitar. Together, the trio weaves complex rhythms and textures into music both surprising and deeply engaging.
Fleck’s genre-defying vision has long embraced bold projects. His 2008 documentary Throw Down Your Heart traced the banjo’s African roots, while his 2023 reimagining of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue further displayed his ability to bridge traditions. Along the way, he has collaborated with luminaries from Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis to Sting and John Scofield.
Castañeda, celebrated for his dazzling harp technique, has worked with Paco de Lucía, Hiromi, and contributed to Disney’s Encanto. Sánchez, a five-time Grammy winner, is internationally acclaimed for his work with Pat Metheny and for composing the Golden Globe-nominated score to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman.
The trio’s synergy crystallized during a 2019 Big Ears Festival performance, later refined during a 2024 residency at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club. There, their interplay matured into a striking musical telepathy, balancing virtuosic command with adventurous risk-taking. Their forthcoming recordings promise to capture this vitality, while tours will introduce audiences worldwide to their singular chemistry.
As Fleck reflects, he never set out to form this group — it emerged naturally, much like the Flecktones decades earlier. What results is a band that pushes the banjo, and modern improvisation, into exhilarating new territory.
