Ruben Studdard is an American singer and actor, who originally became famous due to his winning of the TV show, American Idol. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for his performance of the song, “Superstar”, in 2003. Since his beginning at the TV show, he has released seven studio albums including his platinum selling debut, Soulful. He also had another top selling gospel follow up to this one as well, titled I Need an Angel.
Prior to his beginnings in the music industry, he was born in West Germany, but raised in Alabama. He would sing gospel at church and regularly perform solos as a child while his mother sang in the choir as well. He would also join Alabama A&M University, where he would participate in a music fraternity. He has stated before that his desire to pursue a career in the music industry begin with him majoring in voice studies at his university, and he was also influenced by gospel music growing up, and he saw the TV show as his chance to make his big break.
After winning the TV show, beating the runner up Clay Aiken by only 135,000 votes, he would begin a very successful career for himself. Over the course of the last two decades, he has won numerous awards for his music, as well as released seven studio albums, with his latest being in 2018, titled Ruben Sings Luther. Some of the awards that he has one include a Teen Choice Award, and multiple Billboard Music Awards. He continues to this day to be an inspiration to those wanting to get into the music industry, as he truly has made success for himself.
