Michelle Zauner is a famous Korean American singer, musician, director, and author. She is best known for being the lead vocalist and the songwriter of the alternative pop band, Japanese Breakfast. She wrote a memoir titled Crying in H Mart, which was on the New York Times bestseller list in July 2022. She was also named one of the most influential people in the world by Time for 2022.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, she would move and be raised in Eugene, Oregon, where she would split her time between Korea and America. She would learn how to play the guitar at a young age, and she would be inspired by the Korean American singer Karen O of the band, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She would also begin to write songs, one of her first being about friendships and their fallouts when she was little.
She would study creative writing at Bryan Mawr College in Pennsylvania where she would begin to dive further into music. She would play in a band called “Birthday Girlz” as well as the band “Post Post”, which was an indie band formed in her college dorm room. In 2011, she would start an emo band, Little Big League, with Ian Dykstra, Kevin O’Halloran, and Deven Craige. They would first meet when they were attending the same university. Since then, they have released numerous albums and most recently, she released Jubilee, their third album in 2021. It would be their first album to chart on the Billboard 200, peaking at #56 out of 200.
In her personal life, Michelle Zauner is married to her bandmate, Peter Bradley. She also identifies as bisexual, and she wrote her Japanese Breakfast song “Everybody Wants to Love You” about her relationship with women.
