Mahershala Ali is an American rapper and actor who has received numerous awards for his work over the years. Born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore, he was born and raised in California. Over the years, he would become interested in communications and sports, but would become disenchanted after realizing how the athletes were treated. Then, he would take up acting after participating in Spunk, which would allow him to get into the California Shakespeare Theater upon his graduation.
Mahershala Ali would change his name from Gilmore to Ali after converting to Islam. In 2010, he began to promote and use his new name, Mahershalala Ali as opposed to his full birth name. Under the stage name, Prince Ali, he would also create rap music in the late 2000s and the early 2010s. He would release his first album, Corner Ensemble, in 2007. He did not promote a tour but focused on his acting career.
In his personal life, Ali is married to Amatus Sami-Karim, an actress and musician. They had their first child in February of 2017. He’s starred in numerous films including The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, Moonlight, Eternals, and Swan Song.
