Ice-T's debut album "Rhyme Pays" (1987) hails his East Coast roots. Born Tracy Marrow in New Jersey in 1958, it's in Los Angeles where he honed his keen observational eye, particularly on gang culture. Introduced to heavy metal by a cousin and later drawn to hip-hop during his Army service, Ice-T returned to L.A. armed with turntables and a microphone. Inspired by Schoolly D's "P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?)," Ice-T documented L.A. gang life with "6 'N the Mornin'," pioneering gangsta rap. His career, marked by classics like "Power" (1988) and "O.G. Original Gangster" (1991), confronted societal issues and challenged free speech limits, notably with Body Count's "Cop Killer."
