Cynthia Erivo, born Cynthia Onyedinmanasu Chinasaokwu Erivo to Nigerian parents in South London, initially pursued music psychology but graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Making her West End debut in 2011, she later achieved Grammy and Tony Awards for her role as Celie in the 2015 Broadway revival of "The Color Purple." Her cinematic debut was in 2018's "Widows," directed by Steve McQueen. In 2019, Erivo starred as Harriet Tubman in "Harriet," earning Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song. The multi-talented artist is set to portray Aretha Franklin on the series "Genius" and is working on her debut album for release in the Summer of 2021 through Verve Records / Universal Music Group.
